Psychiatry=Soul Healing
Who Knew?
In 2007, the late and amazing Susan Salasin, who worked for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, called me, introduced herself and asked if she could visit my agency. Susan reported that she had received many independent reportsabout the effectiveness of my program in truly resolving traumatic memory. Within five minutes of her arrival, I told her this: Susan, if I am going to get a lot of attention for what I’m doing here, I need to come out of the closet with a very important principle of this practice. All healing happens on a spiritual plane. And her response: Teresa, I wish all the psychiatrists and psychologists knew that!
And you think that they would know this, given the meanings of both words.
psychiatry (n.)
"the medical treatment of mental diseases," 1846, from French psychiatrie, from Medieval Latin psychiatria, literally "a healing of the soul," from Latinized form of Greek psykhē "mind" (see psyche) + iatreia "healing, care" (see -iatric). (Clearly, something went terribly wrong in 1846!) https://www.etymonline.com/
The word psychology derives from the Greek word psyche, for spirit or soul. The latter part of the word "psychology" derives from -λογία -logia, which refers to "study" or "research" Wikipedia
What I realized long ago is that a critical part of my job was to see the soul in front of me. It was important for me to see what was lovable and how that was different than what they were demonstrating as far as behaviors and emotions. I also realized that if I couldn’t find something that was lovable, I couldn’t help that person. That has only happened a few times over the decades, but it has happened. (And I did pursue sessions about what was triggered in me. This is part of responsible practice.)
This is another differentiating factor that makes Traditional Trauma Resolution another thing entirely different from any other ‘treatment’ for trauma.
There are other factors, but you’ll need to tune in! Check back here for the link to: What is Traditional Trauma Resolution?
